Fly-Lite (Rain Fly/Tarp)- Lightweight, Modular Hammock System in the Making
I have decided to blog through the development of a few of our new products coming out (hopefully) in Fall of '15. It won't be well written and it will definitely take a lot of time but as a company we love the idea of transparency - it's not something you see very often in our industry, so we want to show you what it's like from start to finish developing a new product. I am going to attempt to write on consistent occasion until the Fly-Lite is in your pack, and I'd love to have your feedback and comments as we go through this journey together.
Prequel: Truth be told I developed the Fly-Lite prototype back in 2012 (pre-Nubé launch), but we've been a little busy trying to stand up a gear company here lately and unfortunately new product development has had to wait. With the successful launch of the Nubé Hammock Shelter and SMr ILLUMINATE manufacturing at a somewhat stable point, it's now time to turn back towards my passion - Design.
The Idea: Every new product starts with an idea, usually mine are wrapped around solving a problem. The problem I wanted to face was extravagant rain protection in a truly ultra-light rainfly. Over the last year we have had a substantial amount of positive feed back from our new to market product the Nubé, but one comment I have heard a lot is "I'd love a modular package from Sierra Madre Research" maybe something "a little more focused on light-weight". Well enter the Fly-Lite, an elegantly shaped minimalist rain protection/tarp/rain fly product for hammock campers.
Fly-Lite Product Goals:
- Lightweight hammock system
- Quick to set-up
- Minimalist features
- Modular system design
- Rain protection for all SMr hammocks
I would really love to have your feed back on this product, leave me a comment and tell me what you think. What do you want to see/not see? How light should it be? What color?
Enjoy the Adventure,
Chief of Design
